Rome is the Capital of Italy. There are many ancient buildings to be seen in Rome.

The Trevi Fountain is one of the most famous fountains in the world. There is a tradition of throwing coins into the fountain. You tradition was to throw the coin over the left shoulder with the right hand. There is so much money thrown into the coin each day that the authorities have been able to use the money for charity.

Pompeii
Pompeii was an ancient Roman town. Pompeii and Herculaneum were destroyed when Mount Vesuvius (which can be seen in the background) erupted in 79 AD. The eruption destroyed the city. Ships were sent to rescue the inhabitants of the Pompeii but it was too late. The inhabitants were killed and buried under tonnes of ash. |

The Romans loved to bathe. This is the inside of the public baths in Pompeii. |
There were a lot of bakeries in Pompeii. They milled their own flour with these mills. There were also "takeaways". People could buy hot food from them which could be taken away to be eaten. |

The Amphitheatre found in Pompeii is the oldest surviving Roman amphitheatre. Shows should as fights between gladiators were put on in the amphitheatre. |
There were beautiful villas outside of the town. |

There were some mosaics like these found when Pompeii was excavated. The mosaic with the dog says "Beware of the Dog" in Latin!

Frescoes were also uncovered in Pompeii. Some were inside temples, while others were in the homes of the wealthy. Frescoes were painted onto the plaster while it was still wet. |

The Romans liked to drink wine. The machine below was used to crushed the grapes and the juice from the grapes was caught in the vat. The grapes juice was then used to make wine.

Herculaneum
Herculaneum is located at the foot of Mount Vesuvius. It was an ancient Roman town which was destroyed by a pyroclastic flow when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD. |

Herculaneum was a wealthier and nicer town than Pompeii.
Unlike Pompeii it was covered in a deep layer of pyroclastic material. This preserved objects such as stairs, doors, roofs, beds and even food.

There were bakeries and "takeaways" in Herculaneum. People could buy hot food from them which could be brought home to be eaten. |
There were also other types of shops such as oil and wine merchants. |

Capri
Villa San Michele was a ancient Roman villa. When it was being restored they found statues and other artifacts. There are amazing views from the villa to the town below. |

There is a brilliant view from the top of the mountain. You have to travel up on the little single seat cable car ride. |

These islands are located in the shallow Venetian Lagoon so people travel around by boat. You can travel around by gondola or by motor boat.
