The Titanic
The wealthy had luxurious accommodation. There was a swimming pool, a library and a gym on-board for those travelling in first class. Their cabins were beautifully decorated.
The Titanic was thought to be unsinkable. The ship had new and improved features that were supposed to prevent the ship from sinking.
There were not enough lifeboats on-board for all of the passengers and crew. However, in the panic some of the lifeboats were launched before they were full. It took nearly three hours for the Titanic to sink. There were over 2,200 passengers on-board but only around 700 people were rescued.
The news of the disaster travelled around the world. People were horrified at the loss of life.
Newspaper articles like these were printed in newspapers around the world. Inquiries were held in America and Britain into what happened. As a result of these inquiries rules about the safety standards on ships were changed. One of the new recommendations related to how many lifeboats had to be put on a ship. |
