The Taj Mahal is one of the most beautiful buildings in India. The Taj Mahal means "Crown of Palaces" in Hindustani. It is an marble mausoleum that was built in the city of Agra by the Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan, for his wife, Mumtaz Mahal, when she died in 1631.
The Taj Mahal is covered in beautiful calligraphy and plant motives. There are also passages from the Qur'an on the buildings. There are 99 names of Allah written in calligraphy on the side of Mumtaz Mahal's tomb.
It was rumored that Shah Jahan had the hands cut off the people who worked on the Taj Mahal once it was finished. His reasoning was that nobody would ever be able to build such a beautiful building ever again.
