Religion in France
The majority religion in France is Catholicism but there are also Muslims, Protestants, Jews and other religions.
There are a lot of churches in France. You can often see the spires above the other buildings in the towns.
There are also many monasteries and cloisters which can be visited. Some were built like fortresses!
In many cities in the south of France you can see statues of the Virgin Mary in the corners of buildings, just above the street. Over 100,000 people died in the area during the plague. It was thought that blessing yourself under these statues, as you passed, protected you.
Many people had religious pictures and beautiful copies of the bible.
In Nice an Orthodox church was built by the Russian Royal Family for the Russians living in the French Riviera. Their church is very beautiful. You can see pictures of it below:
